Creepy dude – What are you reading, miss?

Me – Nothing, get away. I’m waiting for someone here and that’s not you so don’t stand in my way.

Creepy dude – Ouch… You’re a bit of a tiger, aren’t you…

Me – Man, look at me, read me well. No way, get away from me, right now.

Creepy dude – Ok, easy bitch… I was just trying.

Me – Yeah yeah. Bye.

[aesop_content color=”#352611″ background=”#333333″ columns=”1″ position=”none” img=”https://simonmuys.com/zodia/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2016/01/quoteback-1.jpg” imgrepeat=”repeat” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”up”]My target hasn’t even flinched. He hasn’t noticed me yet. That’s even stranger from what I know of him. I’m gonna have to show off a little bit… Let’s get a little closer, this is my chance.

[/aesop_content]

Me – Omlouvám se, Madam, I’m looking for a book called The Universe in a Mirror by Robert Zimmerman… It’s about the Hubble telescope. I’ve been told you had it here, but I can’t find it anywhere.

Librarian – Well, it is supposed to be here, on those shelves behind… Let me look at our intranet… Yes, look, on this shelf. I guess it’s on the upper one. I’m gonna get a step ladder to reach it.

Other creep – May I help you miss? I can reach that for you.

[aesop_content color=”#352611″ background=”#333333″ columns=”1″ position=”none” img=”https://simonmuys.com/zodia/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2016/01/quoteback-1.jpg” imgrepeat=”repeat” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”up”]Damn, not you idiot. At least Rajavi looked up from his book and saw me… But I’m gonna have to push this one away too now…

[/aesop_content]

Me – Oh thanks, you’re a real sweetheart.

Other creep – So you’re interested in Astronomy?

[aesop_content color=”#352611″ background=”#333333″ columns=”1″ position=”none” img=”https://simonmuys.com/zodia/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2016/01/quoteback-1.jpg” imgrepeat=”repeat” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”up”]Dude, comment on the book I picked? In a library? Much too easy path. Go away…

[/aesop_content]

Me – Yes, I really need to read this. I think I’m gonna sit over there. Thanks again.

Other creep – Wait, do you mind if I join you? I’m also very interested in looking at stars…

Me – Well, yes I do mind… I don’t have that much time and I need to be focused, sorry.

Other creep – Ok, hum, right… But maybe… What about a coffee afterwards?

Me – Sir, thank you for getting me the book, but really… No. Have a nice day.

Other creep – Alright alright, have a nice day…

[aesop_content color=”#352611″ background=”#333333″ columns=”1″ position=”none” img=”https://simonmuys.com/zodia/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2016/01/quoteback-1.jpg” imgrepeat=”repeat” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”up”]Ok, let’s pretend we’re pissed off by all that. One should never make things too easy. Especially when the target is a skilled seducer… He IS looking at me now. On my side at least this is going to be all too easy. Let’s look even shyer for a minute more and then I’ll make the kill. So, this book… Wow, this must be pretty boring to say the least. I’m so glad all that university period is behind me. Studying has never really been my thing anyway…

Ok, boy. You’ve looked at me long enough. Let’s toss my hair a bit, just to be sure his body temperature is going in the right direction… They should make contests of that. Hair-tossing. I would be unbeatable. Alright, now, steady boy. Don’t look away. Now let’s go… NOW.

Ouuuuuuhhhh that was smooth… Dude, you’re so mine now. You don’t even know it but this is like a done deal. A fraction of furtive eye contact, a tiny blush and the simple hint of a smile. It’s all it takes. Women around the world might be debating everything from the way you dress or put on make-up to the way you play with him like a cat with a mice, but real women know. It only takes one glance. The one where you let him see. Everything he wants. Everything he ever dreamed of. The hook. Ok, now, it’s like pulling the fish onto the boat. Second pass.

Now he’s caught. I can just feel the way he’s trying to look at me. He’s not reading anymore. He just thinks about it. Be obsessed, darling. You know I’ve seen you. You’ve seen me pushing away anybody else. You know you’re special. You’re the one who can… Just try, baby… Third pass, my favourite.

I can feel he’s been watching me from the corner of his eye for five minutes so I just turn straight, look at him directly, a bit pissed off, and I give him a stare that says ok, boy I can see you’re looking at me but please stop staring cause I’m not available and this makes me utterly uncomfortable. Classic.

Of course you hate that. Who am I? You know I’m smoking hot but you’re not any lambda guy trying to hassle a beauty with loud jokes… You think yourself a gentleman and you’re not used to staring. That’s alright, handsome, I know you… I’ll give you that fourth look with a shy uncomfortable smile that says it all… Fourth pass.

That’s right boy. Come see mama.

Rajavi – Hi, I don’t know why you have to read this. But it sucks. You won’t find anything useful in there.

Me – Could you please stop staring at me?

Rajavi – What? I… I wasn’t…

Me – Come on… And you just want to help with my lecture?

Rajavi – I’m… I’m sorry, I don’t want to bother you. I just thought…

Me – Look, you’re the third guy who has tried to ‘help me’ in the last five minutes. I’m not gonna repeat myself. I’m here to read. I’m not looking for boyfriends.

Rajavi – Well, alright princess. Sorry. I’m here to read too, you know.

Me – You didn’t seem to be reading that much.

Rajavi – Oh come on. Like you haven’t been watching me since you sat down… Those eyes you’ve been making at me.

Me – What? I’m sorry, sir, but you’re really mistaken. I was looking at you because you were staring like a predator ready to skin its prey.

Rajavi – Really? You’re quite sure of yourself, little girl. You’re not that hot.

Me – Am I not?

Rajavi – Well… I mean yes you are really fit. But my gosh, don’t you just know it…

Me – Oh, that’s sweet. Very rock’n’roll. So because I just don’t open my arms to you, I’m a proud bitch… You know what, little boy, you’re not the first one to do it this way.

Rajavi – I didn’t say that… I…

Me – What are you reading anyway? What’s this? The Handbook of Accelerator Physics and Engineering… You’re majoring in physics too?

Rajavi – Optics. I told you I read The Universe in a Mirror. It’s part of my actually.

Me – Oh… So what, you wanna work for SpaceX or what?

Rajavi – Hum… Well, maybe… That would be great… We all want to be part of something bigger than ourselves somehow, don’t you think?

Me – …

Rajavi – I’m sorry, I should let you read. You’ve stated that clearly enough.

Me – No, you’re gonna buy me a cup of coffee.

Rajavi – What? I’m… Am I? You…

[aesop_content color=”#352611″ background=”#333333″ columns=”1″ position=”none” img=”https://simonmuys.com/zodia/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2016/01/quoteback-1.jpg” imgrepeat=”repeat” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”up”]He’s cute but we’ll have to harden him a bit if he’s to be part of the organisation.

[/aesop_content]

Rajavi – Alright… Let me take my stuff… Where d’you want to go?

Me – Why don’t you man up a little bit and decide for both of us?

Rajavi – … If you want to play hardball I’ll quit handling you with care.

[aesop_content color=”#352611″ background=”#333333″ columns=”1″ position=”none” img=”https://simonmuys.com/zodia/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2016/01/quoteback-1.jpg” imgrepeat=”repeat” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”up”]That sounds promising.

They have been watching Saïd Rajavi for quite a while I guess. Brilliant student in optical engineering, fierce sportsman, speaks four languages fluently, holds three passports… Most importantly, the man is a lonesome soul who’s experienced terrible traumas in his Iranian childhood when his parents and sisters were executed by Ahmadinejad’s government during its 2009 re-election. He’s angry, thirsty for justice, he has been approached by Islamists to turn to Jihad but noticeably turned them down while feeding German BND agency with information about the people who had been contacting him. Athena had given me information about the guy’s ethics – his engagement with freedom of speech through various collaborative websites. I myself have found a lot of other interesting information about him, like how he had been fencing at Karlova University and been captain of the volleyball team. No parent, no girlfriend… A shame with such a lovely face…

The NTK library is a funny building, with drawings and schemes everywhere on the stairs concrete walls. Modern and arty. It suits Prague’s student life somehow. He hasn’t said a word since we moved towards the cafe downstairs. He’s a silent one. Even better.

Rajavi – So what owes me the pleasure of you bringing me here? I thought you weren’t looking for boyfriends.

Me – I’m not. But I’m definitely looking for something.

Rajavi – Ok… So what is that?

Me – Well… You know…

Rajavi – You’re looking for that in a library?

Me – Where else? You get information on anything you want in a library. You just have to open your eyes… I’ll take an espresso please, Madam.

Rajavi – Make it two, děkuji moc! … But you were looking for the Hubble book specifically. Do you want to work in the space industry? Are you one of those who want to put a million people on Mars?

Me – No, not really. I have other intentions. Is that your goal?

Rajavi – Space? No, I don’t think so… I mean, I don’t know. I guess I’m not that clear on what I want to do either.

Me – Isn’t it a problem for you? You seem to be ok with that. But I know I can’t.

Rajavi – Of course it’s something I think about. All the time, actually. But I guess somehow you have to understand you won’t always know what life is all about. I’ve already had a lot going on in my life. I know it’s silly to plan too far ahead. There is always something that will get in your way at some point.

Me – So right now how do you imagine things in your life? You’re gonna graduate… From what by the way? Masters programme? And then what? You’ll find a decent job and settle down?

Rajavi – I’m starting a PhD in the university’s Institute of Physics. So I’m not yet asking myself which job I’ll get. And what’s so wrong about settling down?

Me – It’s unsettling.

Rajavi – You seem like a girl any man would settle down with.

Me – But maybe not a girl to settle for any man…

Rajavi – Maybe. I don’t know… I have had a rough life you know. I’m Iranian. I was cast away from my country six years ago. I’ve been a homeless migrant. True story. Now I’m just glad I’ve been granted permission to study here. Prague is a beautiful city. What more could I want?

Me – But aren’t you mad at the world for all that?

Rajavi – I’m mad at the Iranian government. That’s for sure. But not at the world, no. I can’t say I was warmly welcomed when I arrived in Europe, but I’ve been given opportunities nonetheless.

Me – Maybe you’re not the one I’m looking for then.

Rajavi – Am I not? I thought you were looking for something to do with your life…

Me – I’ve never talked about my life.

Rajavi – So you WERE looking for a man?

Me – No. I’m not. I was looking for you.

Rajavi – For me?

Me – Yes. I thought I could help you. I thought I could give you answers. And purpose. Something to live for. But since you are so certain you don’t need it…

Rajavi – What? What are you talking about?

Me – I’m sorry for the inconvenience, have a nice day, sir.

Rajavi – Wait! What did I say? I don’t even know your name!

Me – You’ll never know my name. And you didn’t say anything wrong. I’m just realising you might not have the inner fuel I seek.

Rajavi – Oh seriously miss, what do you know? Because I don’t seem completely lost in life to you, then I have no inner strength? What do you think? I don’t shake when I talk. I’m at peace with myself and I don’t need anybody to give me purpose. Do I want to make a difference? Sure. I’m not all about changing the world, but I definitely think about what I can do to be proud of myself at night. And there again, I don’t need anybody for the task. You judge me like you already know all about me. You’re really a beauty lady, I can’t tell you otherwise. But you should learn how to refrain from being over-confident, because it blinds you. Just go then.

[aesop_content color=”#352611″ background=”#333333″ columns=”1″ position=”none” img=”https://simonmuys.com/zodia/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2016/01/quoteback-1.jpg” imgrepeat=”repeat” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”up”]It’s a gamble. I can’t say I’m a one hundred percent sure about him. But anyway, Athena’s instructions didn’t let allow for much interpretation. I feel the pin in my pocket. The angular Z. The circle around. Saïd Rajavi, here comes the hammer. Let’s put it out there, on the table. Tadaaa!

His face freezes. He’s mute. He stares at the pin blankly, realising what I really am. I remember the feeling when it had happened to me. It was just a few months back. And nobody had heard about Zodiac back then, certainly not me. Still just by looking at this pin I had known. This is about something big. Something bigger. I’m being recruited. And not for any job.

His eyes raised to meet mine. A stark look, mixing defiance and pride, confusion and awareness. Saïd Rajavi is a handsome young man.

[/aesop_content]

[aesop_timeline_stop num=”GMT+1 12:02″ title=”GMT+1 12:02″]

Rajavi – Is it a joke?

Me – Do I seem to be?

A symbol of justice in the shadows. A way to avenge orphans from orphan-makers. A dark path to a redeemed light. I am not a dark lord young padawan. My proposal is not to join evil. I’m not asking you to do something you would not want to do. I’m just giving you the opportunity to finally make sense of you existence. I want to enlighten you.

[/aesop_content]

Rajavi – Are you recruiting me?

Me – I’m asking you.

Rajavi – So you don’t study optics.

Me – I know you had bought this book a couple of months back.

[aesop_content color=”#352611″ background=”#333333″ columns=”1″ position=”none” img=”https://simonmuys.com/zodia/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2016/01/quoteback-1.jpg” imgrepeat=”repeat” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”up”]His stare is somehow becoming even starker. He feels betrayed. Played. Spied. He looks around him as if someone was listening. Then comes back to me with a glance of mistrust.

[/aesop_content]

Me – Only you can know. We know you could be part of it. But you’ll have to be up to the task. Only you can decide whether you will.

Rajavi – Can I refuse?

Me – Of course you can. This is not about a big evil here. Zodiac doesn’t harm anyone who hasn’t expressly deserved it. And that takes a lot. Whether you refuse, or quit after several months, or fail somehow someday, there is no other consequence than ceasing to hear from us again. No harm done. Ever.

[aesop_content color=”#352611″ background=”#333333″ columns=”1″ position=”none” img=”https://simonmuys.com/zodia/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2016/01/quoteback-1.jpg” imgrepeat=”repeat” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”up”]He’s grave. But I know he’s curious. I knew from the file I had. But I had also got it after two minutes discussing with him. Everything I represent appeals to him. And I’m not talking about my body here. Not even about myself. But Zodiac. I’m sure he’s heard about it. I’m sure he’s read about it online. I’m sure he’s been dreaming we do something in Iran. To avenge his parents. I’m sure he values what we stand for.

[/aesop_content]

Rajavi – How does it work?

Me – I won’t tell you that. I will let you think about your life. What you expect from it. What you want to do with it. I’ll let you figure out who you want to be and what you’re ready to do to reach it. I’ll let you have several days to think about it. Then I’ll find you. I won’t tell you why, nor where. I’ll find you and there, you will give me an answer. Only then will you start receiving instructions.

Rajavi – I will never know anything or anyone else? I’ve read people in Zodiac know only tiny bits of what’s really going on there…

Me – That’s correct. Since we’re a secret organisation, but we don’t want to kill anyone who comes to know about us, we keep relationships and knowledge very cloudy to avoid jeopardising security of other knights. You won’t know much. You won’t know who you’re working with. But you will know why you’re doing what you’re asked to do. That I guarantee.

Rajavi – Can I set targets myself?

Me – No. You can’t. And won’t. I will not go into details, Saïd. You already know everything you need to know to be able to make your decision. And therefore I will leave it there.

Rajavi – Wait… Can’t I… Just… Don’t you have anything to say to sell it to me? I don’t even know your name… Can’t we just go and have dinner or…

Me – You won’t know my real name. And after giving me your answer, you won’t ever see me again. Zodiac is not about finding friends, or a girlfriend. I’m a filter to avoid anybody reaching you. You want me as far away from you as possible.

Rajavi – But how do I know? What made you join? The first and foremost reason?

Me – Life and death are sacred taboos in our society. But they’re just empty concepts you need to fill by yourself. If you wonder about what they are and what is their meaning. If your personal experience makes you reflect on all that, thinking it just doesn’t make sense… If you want to find better answers, just do it. It will turn everything upside down. You might discover things you hate about mankind, people, or about yourself. But you will not regret having tried to learn.

Rajavi – You make it sound like a religion, or a sect…

Me – This is both. This is about looking at the stars and finding your place among them. Taking a step back from this world and trying to balance the universe.

Rajavi – You are a mystical lady.

Me – Call me Gemini. Goodbye Saïd.

Α – DRAGON

Me – Okay, I’m here.

Andromeda – Hi Dragon, what’s up?

Me – A little tensed right now, how are you doing girl?

Andromeda – You know, I’m on the sweet part of things here.

Me – Yeah, you should be glad. So what’s the program now?

Andromeda – Your target is three kilometres ahead. You need to get going right away. Don’t waste time. We have two drones over the villa so we already have eyes there.

Me – Don’t worry, I’m already on my way. Do you have any more information for me?

Andromeda – Nothing you should be aware of, no.

Me – Delightful.

[aesop_content color=”#352611″ background=”#333333″ columns=”1″ position=”none” img=”https://simonmuys.com/zodia/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2016/01/quoteback-1.jpg” imgrepeat=”repeat” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”up”]The night is clear and this landscape is easy to cross. This mission shouldn’t be that hard. Surely they wouldn’t have chosen a difficult one for my first kill? But still I know the difficulty will not be the field. It is all a test. A real life test. But a test still. Am I really able to deliver? Joining Zodiac was all about this. Being ready to pull the trigger when others wouldn’t. I have been preparing for this moment for months now and still I am not sure. Do I really have it in me? Am I suited for the job or not? Will I follow carefully the instructions? And the voice of the distant English operator who must be talking to me from her computer, in her warm pyjamas?

I’m running fast. I’m well ahead of schedule. The AS50 on my back doesn’t feel heavy compared to the heavy weights I’ve forced myself to carry on my daily runs. It’s quite a light gun anyway. I should slow down. Being too early will not do. Or maybe it will be an opportunity to have more time to calm down after the run. I haven’t missed a target for the last three months, even after ten kilometres runs.

I know why I do that. I didn’t really expect them to be that transparent on the target. I guess they wanted me to understand why he’s been set up to die. As if it would avoid having me thinking I have to put a blind trust in people who would not dare meet me. I understand. I also understand why all the secrecy. Still I really do feel like I’m jumping from a cliff with a blindfold just because someone I don’t know told me to. I knew what it would be like all along. I knew why I accepted it. I could foresee all that so well. Still the feeling sticks in my guts.

This is the neighbourhood. Perseus’ brief stated I have to reach the small wood and go around the house so as to hit it from behind. The villa is always well guarded with a dozen men so I must be cautious, but this is clearly not enough to control the perimeter from the threat of a skilled sniper. There shouldn’t be anyone looking for me out there.

Andromeda – Dragon, can you give me a little status update?

Me – I’m entering the wood now. I should be in place in five minutes. On schedule.

Andromeda – Good boy. Anything weird on your way?

Me – No, anything weird from above?

Andromeda – No, I’m seeing the regular dozen guards around the villa. Most of them are in front but there are two posted on the back lawn. You’ve seen your briefing, you will fire only once, otherwise you will be at risk. Make it count.

Me – Do you see the target too?

Andromeda – There are eight heat signatures within the house. I have been monitoring it since midday so I’m positive one of them is him.

[aesop_content color=”#352611″ background=”#333333″ columns=”1″ position=”none” img=”https://simonmuys.com/zodia/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2016/01/quoteback-1.jpg” imgrepeat=”repeat” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”up”]It is hard not to make any noise in these woods, even with those ninja shoes I cannot avoid cracking a few branches. Nothing that can sound suspicious five hundred meters away I guess, but still I realize how difficult it must be to really move like a shadow. If I am going to be good at this, I must master the art of silent approach. Right now I seem so far from it. I feel like a boar charging a deer…

[/aesop_content]

Me – Ok, the villa is in sight, four hundred meters ahead I would say.

Andromeda – Can you find a spot.

Me – Don’t worry about that. I’ll be in place in five minutes tops.

Andromeda – Pegasus is ready too.

Me – I actually don’t care. I’d rather know he’ll be ready in thirty minutes when I reach him…

Andromeda – Yes, sorry. Just nervous chit-chat.

Me – Oh, so you ARE nervous.

Andromeda – I just want everything to go as planned.

[aesop_content color=”#352611″ background=”#333333″ columns=”1″ position=”none” img=”https://simonmuys.com/zodia/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2016/01/quoteback-1.jpg” imgrepeat=”repeat” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”up”]The AS50 is a piece of cake to mount. I have to say they aren’t scarce on expenditures. The material sent with the Perseus brief was really pro stuff. Things that make me look like a real pro assassin. And I guess I am, or gonna be. I should pull myself together and start acting like it. Remember the movie Cool runnings: your hand soft and your mind clear.

[/aesop_content]

Me – Hey Andromeda?

Andromeda – Señor?

Me – What, you’re latina?

Andromeda – No, but aren’t you?

Me – Not really.

Andromeda – You had a question?

Me – I’m almost there, could you start giving me updates on the people inside?

Andromeda – Ok, two haven’t moved for a while in the upstairs rooms. I guess they’re the two children.

Me – Great.

Andromeda – You knew about the children, didn’t you?

Me – Yeah, I guess I had the same file as you. It’s great they’re asleep, that’s all.

Andromeda – You know about the child trafficking too?

Me – I’m not questioning the mission niña. Next six people in the house?

Andromeda – Two guards posted in the entrance corridor and four persons in the living room. One is the wife, the guards, and him. I would guess the two guards are near the main door and the couple on a sofa or suchlike. They must be sitting.

The signature is pinned to the tree. A bronze Z pin that looked like a mix of the Anarchy logo and Zorro’s trademark. What a goofy symbol… A first look in the viewfinder confirms the operator’s review. Still I cannot see the guy. TV is on. A stupid telenovela it seems. Ok, time to concentrate on slowing my pulse. It is higher than it should be, even after the run.

Me – I’m all set, but I don’t have a shot yet. They’re watching TV.

Andromeda – Can you move to another spot?

Me – Not a chance, we just need a little patience. As soon as he leaves his couch, he’s mine.

Andromeda – He’ll be moving.

Me – Not a problem.

Andromeda – You’re sure?

Me – Talk to me belleza How did you end up killing people from your computer?

Andromeda – We shouldn’t be talking about our personal lives, you know that.

Me – I would do with a conversation though.

Andromeda – Are you stressed?

Me – You could say that. I just need to see through the waiting. Will you help me?

Andromeda – Is this your first time?

Me – I thought we shouldn’t talk about personal lives…

Andromeda – This isn’t personal.

Me – Still you know the drill.

Andromeda – Well, this is a first for me.

Me – Really?

[/aesop_content]

Andromeda – Don’t worry, I have it all covered.

Me – I’m sure you do. Feeling excited?

Andromeda – I don’t know. It still feels pretty unreal. I mean it’s not like I’m handling the gun.

[aesop_content color=”#352611″ background=”#333333″ columns=”1″ position=”none” img=”https://simonmuys.com/zodia/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2016/01/quoteback-1.jpg” imgrepeat=”repeat” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”up”]No it’s not. And it is not my first mission. But gathering intel and doing reconnaissance has little to do with that. The end of the gun is trembling. Not much. But for this task, any micro imprecision will be too much. I must calm down.

[/aesop_content]

Me – The man is trash, you know that don’t you?

Andromeda – I have no problem with the mission.

Me – Can I ask you a favour?

Andromeda – Anything.

Me – Could you go over his file and explain me why we’re doing this?

Andromeda – Alright… Let me see…

[aesop_content color=”#352611″ background=”#333333″ columns=”1″ position=”none” img=”https://simonmuys.com/zodia/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2016/01/quoteback-1.jpg” imgrepeat=”repeat” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”up”]It is impressive how everything can stay still forever when you need them to move. Andromeda – Alfredo Romero, sixty-five, Argentinian, lives in Villa Carlos Paz, Córdoba Province, you know all that… Six kids, two with his first wife, two with other girls, the last two with current wife Esmeralda, twenty-eight. He made a fortune in so-called journalism consisting of selling positive advertising for ill-reputed countries within famous newspapers. Complaints from country authorities about his companies’ threats and methods, complaints from his young workers… He has built an empire of tentacle agencies all doing the same thing and owned by him through a vast network of trusts in fiscal paradises. The complete map was in the folder, it’s really a gigantic work, I don’t even get how they have been able to compile that much data…

Me – The show seems to be ending.

Andromeda – It should… You’re running late now.

Me – Continue please, it’s soothing.

Andromeda – The ad agencies are a model of scandalous business, but legal. The system made him the richest man and a local figure in Córdoba. But he’s also been running parallel activities that were of interest to Zodiac. Kidnapping, ransom demands, kid-trafficking, drug trafficking, pressure over judges, policemen and political figures. It seems the governor of Córdoba is under his rule. Romero really is a monster when you see all the alleged charges and the money he’s making out of it. His first born is living a grand style life in London where he drives to the best nightclubs in a magnificent Lamborghini…

The outside guard has lit another cigarette. His colleague too. The two guards inside seem bored as hell. The girl is a beauty. Damn, how can she be that hot with such an old creep? Alfredo is here – old, and rather fat. Yet he looks a handsome man from this distance. My finder is set on him. Steady. It doesn’t shake. It doesn’t shake. Does it shake? It doesn’t shake. My respiration is steady.

Andromeda – You didn’t touch him?

Me – I did. But I missed his heart. I think I shot his right arm.

Andromeda – They’re still in the middle of the living room. They haven’t got him to a safer place. That’s crazy.

Me – Girl, I need you to quiet down now, no noise until further notice.

Guard 2 – No puede ser! Seguimos hasta el camino, debe estar!

Guard 1 – Estas loco o qué? Es un sniper… Yo no voy pa alla… Vamos.

The truth is, guardaespaldas can not be ready to give their lives for any mafia chief. Still I crawl. In case it’s a trap. In case they are still watching. In case they are not gone. I just hope my moves don’t show through the grass. But there is a little wind to ensure any move would seem natural.
Could it be the wind? I’ve not missed a target in months. And he didn’t even move. I was four hundred meters away. No more. How could I miss such an easy shot? Damn me.
Will they come after me? Is it one of those movies where an assassin fails and is then eliminated by his employer? Can I trust Zodiac? How can I know? I don’t know anything about them. I don’t know anyone. And they know everything about me… They watch me. They find me and pass me messages whenever they choose. Suddenly I realize how crazy all of this was. I’m not an assassin… I’m not a secret superspy or an insensitive killer trained to be flawless… I’m a fucking wreck. They will shoot me.

No. They can’t. It’s not their way. They only shoot people who really deserve it. It’s been documented already. None of the killings that bore their mark were made to silence a non-important target. Or they just didn’t claim those. Impossible. I wouldn’t have chosen to be part of it if it wasn’t moral. I have to believe. Come on Miguel, don’t stop believing.

[/aesop_content]

Andromeda – Dragon?

Me – I told you to stay quiet.

Andromeda – Yes, but the two guards are back at the villa. There are three guards going out with a jeep right now. They’ll be passing over the road in two minutes. No-one else is around you. You need to be going now. The car won’t wait forever.

Me – You’re sure no-one can see me?

Andromeda – I have a drone over the villa and another over your position. I can assure you I’ve got a full overview. You’re safe. Now get the fuck out.

Me – The target? Do you still see his signature?

Andromeda – The heat wouldn’t fade that fast, anyway. But yes, I can still see him. But they haven’t moved yet. They’re still in the living room.

Me – Have they called the police? Or an ambulance?

Andromeda – I don’t monitor their communications, sorry… I don’t know.

Me – Is it possible the place will get surrounded with cops in the next fifteen minutes?

Andromeda – I don’t know. Either way, you have to move faster than this. Go.

Me – Ok. Talk to me while I’m running.

Andromeda – Do you want me to tell you a bedtime story?

Me – Status update girl. I don’t need chit-chat anymore right now.

Andromeda – Sorry… The jeep has left. Do you see the lights?

Me – I see them.

Andromeda – Get away from them, follow the mission track. You shouldn’t be in sight from the road.

Me – Don’t worry, they can’t see me. I do have the map with me.

Andromeda – The kids have woken up. They’re all in the living room. The guards too.

Me – I see blue lights coming from the roadway. Ambulance or police? That fast? Where are the closest stations?

Andromeda – Don’t know… I’m looking for this. I’m gonna fly the drone away from the villa now. I’m afraid someone might catch its signal.

Me – Who will be gathering it?

Andromeda – That is not of your concern, don’t worry.

[aesop_content color=”#352611″ background=”#333333″ columns=”1″ position=”none” img=”https://simonmuys.com/zodia/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2016/01/quoteback-1.jpg” imgrepeat=”repeat” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”up”]I don’t. Me – Holding it. Don’t worry about me. I’ve trained like a beast for this.

Andromeda – I’m sure you did.

Me – What will happen if I missed? Is there a backup team? Do you have anybody to confirm the kill?

Andromeda – Not that I am aware of. But then again I’m only your operator. I’m just here to facilitate your mission.

Me – I think I missed him.

Andromeda – We’ll see soon enough, I guess.

Me – It’s not at all as I had expected.

Andromeda – Killing a man?

Me – All that… I’ve tried to think myself as a professional assassin but it really seems I’m not up to the task. Or I don’t know. It seems all…

Andromeda – You did everything right. The shot was a hard one.

Me – Yes. Everything seems so easy. But still it failed completely. I had imagined a whole James Bond movie.

Andromeda – Are you that hot?

Me – You should see me in a tuxedo…

Andromeda – Daniel Craig style or more Sean Connery?

Me – I would tell you Pierce Brosnan just for the joke.

Andromeda – Ok, take the first road on your left. There is no-one in the streets from what I see. I’ll have the drone fly over one step ahead of you and warn you if I see anyone.

[aesop_content color=”#352611″ background=”#333333″ columns=”1″ position=”none” img=”https://simonmuys.com/zodia/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2016/01/quoteback-1.jpg” imgrepeat=”repeat” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”up”]She’s making things easy. There’s no doubt about that. Just a voice in my ear. And then it’s all the difference. She’s what makes me a professional hitman rather than a random dude on a vendetta trip. No more magic than this. And such a charming voice…

[/aesop_content]

Me – News from Pegasus?

Andromeda – He’s in place. I told him you would arrive in five minutes.

Me – Is he a nice guy?

Andromeda – I didn’t see him in a tuxedo either.

Me – You have the voice of a Bond girl you know.

Andromeda – You imagine me as Ursula Andress right now?

Me – More Denise Richards or Olga Kurylenko.

Andromeda – I’m a distant computer operator. You should think of me more as Dennis Nedry in Jurassic Park.

Me – Ok, you killed it.

Andromeda – Right, then first left again. You’re almost there.

Me – Great. Still no-one in sight? It’s a ghost town or what?

Andromeda – Actually, there is someone coming along the right side of the street on your next left. I’m not sure you should let him see you.

Me – No? You think? I look like a fucking bat with this ninja suit and I have a bazooka on my back, maybe it’s wiser, yes?

Andromeda – I’ll take your sarcasm as a way to release pressure.

Me – Shhht.

Me – Ok, am I there yet?

Andromeda – Three hundred meters. Next right, the car is parked on the right hand-side. It’s a white Chevrolet. Pegasus will start the engine when you pass by. Enter the vehicle quickly and leave.

Me – What else could I do?

[aesop_content color=”#352611″ background=”#333333″ columns=”1″ position=”none” img=”https://simonmuys.com/zodia/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2016/01/quoteback-1.jpg” imgrepeat=”repeat” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”up”]The road is really a residential suburb. It doesn’t even look like a South-American town here. Cars are parked on both sides, in front of cosy houses with green lawns. I stop running but keep a fast walking pace. Two small, dark Chevrolets. Hard to tell the colour in this dim light. Not white at least. An old Buick, the kind of cars you only see in this part of world anymore. A black Volkswagen. Ok, this seems like a white Chevrolet and there seems to be somebody behind the wheel.
Above me, I realize the small bee sound I had come to hear is nothing other than the drone. I look up but nothing can be seen on this dark night.
The engine starts. Inside the car the light reveals a man with a hood covering his face. I enter quickly enough.
